What happened to your Etsy Shop?
I have been getting quite a few questions lately about why I have stopped selling on Etsy and if I will sell on Etsy again at a later date. There are many reasons as to why I left Etsy and NO, I will never be selling on Etsy again!
Here is another blog post from an Etsy makeup seller who sums everything up quite well:
http://mixologymakeup.blogspot.com/2009/06/mineral-makeup-buying-101.html
Keep in mind that Etsy was made to sell HANDMADE goods as well as supplies & vintage items. Here are a few things that really bothered me and forced me to leave as Etsy doesn't want to take action against any of these sellers!
#1 Re-Sellers
Re-sellers are those that purchase micas/oxides from places such as tkb trading and just package them in jars and sell as handmade eye shadows! To top it off, they can sell them for much cheaper as they aren't spending hours formulating eye shadow colors like the rest of us! So to answer those that want to know why my eye shadows are "so expensive", it's because I take the time to formulate my products & provide a high quality eye shadow. If I sold them for $2.50-$3 per 5g jar I would go out of business!
#2 Private Label
There are companies out there such as Lady Bird that sell mineral makeup & other makeup at cheap/wholesale prices. Some of the sellers on Etsy are purchasing these products, slapping on a label and calling it handmade mineral makeup! Example: baked foundation (looks similar to a MAC MSF but matte) - you can't tell me they baked it themselves in their kiln at home! Especially when the exact ones are sold by a private label company
#3 Not sure what to call this type (maybe LAZY/CHEATERS?)
Just today, while browsing the makeup section on Etsy, I saw a pretty matte eye shadow and thought wow, what a gorgeous color! Then I noticed the name of the shadow & thought it sounded familiar. I checked out that sellers page/store and it turns out that this semi-new "company" on Etsy has used formulas from another site (they were for practice purposes), used the SAME shade/color names & even stole the pictures! They simply cropped the pictures down (so as not to show the formula/recipe) and added the color name to make it look like they took the pics themselves. The formulas are there to help newcomers learn how to formulate colors and give you ideas; NOT steal & use as your own! (at least 50% of this sellers "store" is stolen photos)
I could go on, but I'll stop here for now.
Please don't let this stop you from purchasing makeup (and other products) on Etsy, as there are many fabulous & honest sellers. Just be aware they they aren't all what they seem!
